Will things ever go back to normal, or will we always be living in fear of the next pandemic?Updated: April 14th, 2021
Q: Even five, ten years from now, I can’t imagine life will look the same as it did pre-Covid and I don’t see myself doing things (dancing with strangers, being packed onto the subway, crowded planes, bars) with the same ease ever again. Is there a way past this mental block?
It might seem strange to imagine ourselves living as we did pre-COVID now, but we’re pretty adaptable creatures who have bounced back from major global events before, like world wars, for example.
We’ve even beaten pandemics before, some not even that long ago — and yet now, we’re hardly aware of them.
You can find out how we’ve beaten other health crises in the past, like Spanish flu and polio, and how vaccines have helped, in the above video.
There are also lots of things we can do long-term to help reduce the chance of another pandemic in the future, by working together to:
1. Invest in research and preparation for future illnesses
2. Fund and implement vaccine programs
3. Strengthen health systems around the world
